This has a direct effect on the aftermarket because, in contrast to the auxiliary belt, which rarely has a scheduled replacement interval, the timing belt does, and this means that technicians come into contact with the water pump more frequently than previously and it is therefore far easier for them to assess its condition. As a consequence, more are found to be either in need of replacement or are being changed as a best practice precaution, so sales are on the rise. Helpfully, power transmission manufacturers such as Dayco, have proactively responded to this development by adding a water pump to their timing belt kits to provide workshops with a complete aftermarket replacement solution.” Then there are EVs: “For electric vehicles and many hybrid applications, e-pumps are the only solution able to effectively ensure the correct temperature management of the vehicle’s inverters and battery packs, for example. In addition, to reduce emissions and maximise the efficiencies of combustion engine powered models, reaching and maintaining different operating temperatures around the engine is a necessity.” For more information, visit:www.dayco.com Optimal The rise of EVs means new products for new needs, and with this in mind LIQUI MOLY has expanded its EV range with its new Battery Coolant EV 200. David Kaiser, Head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY commented: “Battery Coolant EV 200 acts as a thermal manager. This is extremely important, because the range of the vehicle depends on its energy consumption and the temperature affects the service life of the battery and engine. “For this reason, the temperature of the battery should be kept constant. Depending on the outside climate, it is cooled or heated. With the thermal management system, a distinction is made between direct and indirect battery cooling. This indirect system is more complex, but necessary, as the vehicle batteries are becoming increasingly powerful and therefore significantly hotter.” David added: “For this indirect cooling of the battery segment, which is the case with models from Hyundai and Kia, for example, a special fluid is required, such as that now offered by LIQUI MOLY. It ensures that the battery never gets hotter than 60°C in summer and that the temperature constantly remains within the ideal range between 15°C and 40 °C, even in winter.” Maintain The need for cooling crosses all vehicle types as we have seen. Colin Benzie, Technical Adviser at K-Seal International observed: “Any engine or motor will generate heat, be it conventional combustion technology or electric motors, and that heat has to be transported away via a cooling system in order to prevent the engine or motor overheating and also to maintain optimal operating temperatures. At this stage I’d like to focus on combustion engine cooling, although at K-Seal we are already working on solutions for EV cooling system leaks.” He continued: “Modern cooling systems have come a long way since the days of unpressurised systems and brass radiators, and so has coolant leak repair technology. On the one hand cooling system components are more reliable and designed to last longer. On the other hand, these components are still not completely immune from the effects of aging and also damage caused by excessive load and a lack of maintenance. Motorists are cutting back on routine servicing as the cost of living crisis bites while at the same time the average age of vehicles is increasing as motorists hang on to their cars for longer. A regular cooling system flush and fresh coolant will help to maintain the cooling system in good condition for longer but inevitably leaks will occur which need to be repaired.” Colin added: “Modern cooling systems have narrower and more complex waterways and any leak repair additive must be engineered to flow safely around these waterways. The US standard ASTM D3147 specifies that coolant leak repair additives must seal leaks up to a maximum of 0.6mm and flow freely through openings above 0.85mm, or in other words, fix leaks where required but not clog even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. So, look for products that meet this standard when choosing coolant leak repair additives. K-Seal Permanent Coolant Leak Repair is the only product in the UK independently university tested to conform to this standard.” For more information, visit:www.kseal.com Above: Products from K-Seal JULY/AUGUST 2023 AFTERMARKET 37 Below: Thermal control components from Nissens Automotive www.aftermarketonline.net
