Aftermarket September 2023

Delphi’s UK and Nordics Technical Services Manager Luke Garratt said: “The rise of Stop/Start hybrid and smaller engines by vehicle manufacturers chasing greater efficiency under stringent emissions regimes has hugely ramped up the demands now placed upon ignition coils.” He continued: “In addition to having to generate up to 45,000 volts for efficient combustion, the operating environment is now likely to see greater temperature fluctuations, more high load start cycles, improved performance expectations and weight reductions - all within an engine bay where space is at a premium. “Ignition coils today deliver the high electrical loads of starting cycles far more frequently due to Stop/Start and hybrid engines. Short urban journeys can extend gaps and increase starting cycles further. Ignition coils still need to reliably deliver a strong spark, at the right time, to the right cylinder thousands of times per minute.” Expertise Luke added: “Delphi has recently developed multi spark ignition coils. These are being introduced to the aftermarket too. They fire multiple sparks rather than a 42 AFTERMARKET SEPTEMBER 2023 IGNITION www.aftermarketonline.net single spark on each cycle to burn fuel more efficiently.” Delphi’s Masters of Motion hub now includes a video on how to replace an ignition coil and how to test ignition coils. According to Richard Welland, President at WAI Europe, the quality of ignition parts is key: “The combustion engine is proven technology and as hybridisation and electrification approaches at pace. There’s fewer better opportunities within ignition parts for garages, other than investing in good quality references from reputable suppliers.” He added: “With product development for hybrid powertrain vehicles in mind, WAI has expanded its range of StARS alternators, amid heightened demand for new Stop/Start and mild hybrid products. StARS alternators are the latest generation of rotating electrics technology. They replace the conventional starter motor and alternator with a combined unit that can deliver reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions by using a built-in ECU that delivers Above: Ignition Delphi Technicians with Ignition Coil REALLY STARTING SOMETHING All the latest on ignition systems, including new tech, hot tips and the latest developments
