Aftermarket November 2023

52 AFTERMARKET NOVEMBER 2023 REMANUFACTURED COMPONENTS Remanufactured major units from Ivor Searle Ivor Searle offers a wide range remanufactured automotive major units, inluding petrol and diesel engines, cylinder heads, gearboxes and turbos for cars and LCVs. The range covers over 90% of the UK’s vehicle parc. All Ivor Searle engines, cylinder heads, gearboxes are covered by a 12-month unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty, while a two-year warranty covers all turbochargers. www.ivorsearle.co.uk programme to include inverters and converters, transaxle motors, electrical compressors and lithium-ion batteries, alongside the existing nickel battery remanufacturing. This is an avenue we must develop for the independent sector, because within the next decade, many of these HEVs/BEVs will be visiting the independent workshop for service and repair, not the dealer network.” For more information, visit: www.denso-am.eu Increasingly popular As well as the environmental aspect, remanufactured components can help keep costs down for motorists, and offer garages a way to stay competitive as Klaus Vammen Jensen, Country Manager/Senior Sales Lead at BORG Automotive, noted: “In the automotive sector, Reman is becoming increasingly popular – also because remanufactured products usually offer a better priceperformance ratio.” BORG Automotive supplies around two million remanufactured spare parts a across Europe, including includes starters, A/C compressors, alternators, brake calipers, EGR valves, steering pumps, steering racks and turbochargers. That’s not all though: “BORG Automotive is one of the few remanufacturers able to remanufacture spare parts which communicate with the ECU using protocols such as CAN or FlexRay. This is particularly important for the future of independent vehicle service; Electric parking brakes are just as standard as electronically controlled EGR valves or electrically powered steering racks. The more hybrid vehicles or electric cars establish in the market, the more air-conditioning compressors or electrically power steering racks are driven by their own electric motor instead of a belt.” Rigorous Commenting on Delphi’s remanufactured diesel injectors, pumps and fuel rails, Delphi Sales Manager Nick Maxwell said: “Each unit is subjected to a rigorous seven-step process to help ensure reliability and performance. Only with an OE authorised approach, such as ours, can you be certain that the unit is as good as new and perform as originally intended. “Having passed an initial Delphi inspection, each unit is comprehensively disassembled for a meticulous assessment of each individual constituent part. Components that fail to meet Delphi’s strict standards are sent for recycling and brand-new like-for-like OE replacements are used for reassembly. Parts that do make the grade undergo chemical cleaning processes to bring them back to an as-new condition. Once reassembled, the unit is calibrated ahead of extensive testing. When it comes to injectors, for example, Delphi checks for compliance in fuel delivery, injection pressure and timing. For an even greater end-user cost saving, workshops have the choice of fitting a unit repaired through Delphi’s authorised repair network, in the knowledge that they are remanufactured to the same high standard.” Nick continued: “Workshops should be wary of other socalled remanufacturers or repairers who may simply replace broken or damaged parts, or worse still, simply clean and polish the unit. Such practices are likely to result in poor fuel economy, increased emissions, and sluggish performance; A recipe for a ‘since you did my…’ customer conversation. While Delphi also provides new OE units, its remanufactured range is not only kinder on customer wallets but on the environment too. Delphi’s in-house remanufacturing solution saves between 50 and 70% of resources, and consumes around 85% less energy, compared with a new equivalent. “If it already exists, it's greener to keep it moving, and it's even greener to keep it moving at the same emissions standard as originally intended. Together with its new product range and its authorised repair network, Delphi’s in-house remanufacturing capabilities ensures it has a solution for vehicles of all ages and budgets. Its remanufactured parts are available off-the-shelf through Delphi distributors and the Delphi authorised repair network.” Nick added: “For us it’s about offering choice without compromising our exacting standards. No matter which Delphi solution you opt for, be it a new product, an inhouse Delphi remanufactured unit or an authorised network repaired unit – You’re guaranteed OE performance.” Right to Repair As ACtronics CEO Thijs Jasink observed, the remanufacturing of electronic components is being made more accessible thanks to the growing movement supporting Right to Repair. He noted: “The idea behind the right to repair is clear. For the automotive industry, this is of course a subject that has been high on the agenda for many years and is therefore one of the drivers of this right. That is not surprising: about 80% of European garages are not brand dealers with good support from the car manufacturer. “Moreover, this situation is further reinforced by the fact that parts are now often glued and encrypted in the cars. Combine this with the fact that the technology of products themselves is becoming increasingly complex and you will understand that it is very difficult to offer repair as an option these days.” He observed that calls or further legislation are growing louder: “The first steps in this were taken by the European Parliament in 2020, making spare parts better available for repair specialists. In 2021, the European Union followed with new legislation that stipulated that companies had to make their equipment more sustainable and offer spare parts for up to ten years after the production date. “It is clear that things have changed in recent years. Research from the Eurobarometer survey shows that 79% of European consumers believe that manufacturers should be required by law to make it easier to repair or replace electronic devices. We are convinced that the circular economy will become increasingly important.” www.aftermarketonline.net
