Aftermarket February 2024

20 AFTERMARKET FEBRUARY 2024 TECHNICAL www.aftermarketonline.net EV tyre opportunity for independents The high MOT failure rate EVs experience due to greater tyre wear is a clear opportunity for independent garages according to Matt Cleevely, Managing Director of Cleevely EV. Matt observed: “The degrading state of roads, coupled with EV weight and their unique torque delivery, is seeing demand for EV tyres surge. We’re finding that an MOT failure often transpires into a full set of new tyres. I’d urge other independent garage owners to consider the opportunity here.” Data analysis from Garage Industry Trends also shows that half of all EV MOT failures on vehicles registered after 2016 relate to tyres – almost double that of a diesel. Almost 60% of EV advisories relate to tyre condition as well. Matt continued: “Tyre bays must pay particular attention to load ratings. EVs are heavy, so the correct tyre is essential. Take a Renault Zoe. It has 195/55/R16 tyres. Those that aren’t in the know could fit an 87-load rated tyre, when it should be a 91-load rating.” Matt added: “Initially, we outsourced tyres from large national distributors but faced delivery delays of several days. We swiftly began stocking EV tyres to provide our customers with a better service.” Cleevely EV offers training on ways to successfully run an EV workshop. Supertracker Director Andrew Bates explained: “The use of green lasers is wellreported to improve the visibility, precision and clarity of the laser line. Not only in normal workshop light conditions, but also in outdoor conditions, and over a longer distance, in comparison to the traditional red lasers. This takes an already versatile, mobile solution and makes it more accessible and useful in a wider variety of uses. “This offers a notable advantage for use for track days, race teams and mobile wheel alignment, as well as tyre shops, MOT stations, used car centres and even to operators who are colour-blind.” Andrew added: “Green lasers are also visible in a much wider range of light conditions, meaning it is effective for all year-round work, indoors and out as well as they can travel over longer distances. They also offer clarity and precision due to the brightness. These are all important factors in environments requiring pinpoint accuracy.” For more information, visit: www.supertracker.com Green-eyed monster opportunity?
