22 AFTERMARKET MAY 2024 TECHNICAL www.aftermarketonline.net A step-by-step guide to help garages understand when headlight condensation should be acted upon has been added to the HELLA TECH WORLD online resource. HELLA’s flow-chart shows how to check key areas including the headlamp fixings, seals, ventilation grommets and wiring. Commenting on the issue, Dave Clark, Lighting Product and Brand Manager at HELLA, said: “Moisture inside headlamps can compromise light distribution and also cause corrosion leading to more serious problems or lighting failure,” Modern headlamps include ventilation to equalise pressure, which as a result of temperature changes caused by use can draw saturated humid air from outside into the light interior. This should escape easily when the lamp is in use, but there may be a problem if larger water droplets form and do not evaporate. Meanwhile, the capillary effect can also be an issue. This is where water travel down very narrow pathways such as within electric cables. Water ingress into cables usually occurs at a plug connection if the terminals do not offer sufficient protection against humidity. Dave added: “Water drops on the lens and particularly water gathered in the lower area of the light means the seal must be checked for damage and replaced if necessary. Ventilation openings should also be checked for blockages and the light can be blown dry with oil-free compressed air. If water still accumulates after this, the unit must be replaced.” For more information, visit: www.hella.com/techworld/uk/Technical /Automotive-lighting/Condensation-inheadlight-836/ All the latest technical news and updates relevant to you TECHNICAL UPDATE Welcome to Aftermarket’s technical update section.
