With Top Technician and Top Garage 2019 well on their way, we have a chance to consider what impact the competitions had on last year’s winners. e heard from Top Garage 2018 winners Cedar Garage last month, so in this issue we drop in on Top Technician 2018 champion Shaun Ferguson-Miller. Turn to pages 30-31 to find out about his new venture. Onto the rest of what’s in store. We have something of an MOT theme running through the issue, which you may note. On pages 12-13, Neil Pattemore is looking at what the future holds for the MOT, while on pages 28- 29 Ian Gillgrass is reminding MOT testers to take their Annual Training for the year before the 31 March deadline. He has some helpful tips. At the same time, on page 21, Barry Babister is looking at how the DVSA can see which testers present the most risk to the MOT scheme. That’s not all though. On page 14, Adam Bernstein is starting a look at how taking staff deductions the wrong way might get you in trouble, and how you can avoid getting into said trouble. One way of staying out of trouble is making sure your skills are up to date, which is why on pages 16-17 Andy Savva is making the case for continued training. On the technical front Frank Massey is on pages 26-27, reminding us of some of the pitfalls of autonomous driving. John Batten is showing you how to diagnose things right the first time on pages 24-25, while Hannah Gordon is looking at classic cars on page 20. On the product front, there are features covering vehicle electronics and engine management, turbos, electric and hybrid vehicles, ignition and bearings, as well as a plethora of general products to whet your appetite. We also get a look behind the scenes at Castrol’s research HQ, visit Top Garage 2018 finalists St Andrews Services, and we even had time to have a bit of a rant about apprenticeships. They’re great you know, just like this issue of Aftermarket. Enjoy! Alex Wells Editor
