June 2019

I s it that time of year again already? It feels like just yesterday that I was putting on my Hush Puppies and heading out the door to visit Automechanika Birmingham. Yet a whole year really has passed, and here I am sorting out my massive trade show footwear again. That sounds so glamourous, but I just want to make sure I’m comfortable so I can focus on the important things like new kit, the latest products, and training opportunities, not to mention all the seminars. The only difference is this year I am opting for something sturdier. Comfort can have its downsides. This time I want to be standing tall – I had my toes stepped on once too often last year. Watch out everyone, Arthur is coming through! I got a lot out of my previous trips to the event in the last few years. There is so much to choose from. Apart from the official seminar programme, including those running at the Aftermarket Seminar Theatre (the Editor told me to particularly mention that one for some reason), there were countless other sessions running on many exhibitor stands. It was brilliant being able to find out so much, in the space of a day. It’s not just the volume and the accessibility – you can log attendance at these sessions towards your annual training. It’s not just a jolly you know, there is real substance that can have a very positive impact on your career and business. I’m always saying “you’re never too old to learn.” Well not actually saying it, but I constantly imply the fact. Or so the Editor says. Despite my bufferish ways, I’m like a laser-guided ADAS system when it comes to tracking down the latest info and tech. I want to understand how things work, and when they don’t work, fix them. It’s what got me into this business in the first place and it is what keeps me here. The constant flow of new systems has meant my mind has certainly been occupied. Electric and hybrid vehicles represent a whole new challenge, but I am fairly certain that the internal combustion engine is not finished yet, not by a long way. I found a lot to show that there is life in the old beast yet, a little like me. This being the case, you need to stay on top of technology, and Automechanika Birmingham is the best place for it. I am told that all the info you need to register to attend Automechanika Birmingham 2019 is in the preview (that’s pages 30-47 says the Editor). Make sure you get there early. There is a free breakfast offer too again. Nothing makes a mechanic happier than a free breakfast. Well, a free drink might help too, but they have that too this year. Do make sure you go, as after this year it is going bi-annual and won’t be back until 2021. If you have the urge to go to Automechanika next year, it means a flight to Frankfurt. That would be fun, but if you have the show on your doorstep, make the most of it. See you there.
