In this issue, you will hear a lot about the future, after all that is where we are going to spend the rest of our lives. More to the point, if you want your business to exist in that future, you need to consider how to make sure it gets there today. We consider some of the challenges ahead in this issue, ranging from mobility services to legislative changes. Another thing that is in the future for the Aftermarket team, but in the recent past for you, is Top Technician/Top Garage 2019. The finals for both competitions are being held in about 48 hours’ time as I write this. While I focus on getting the July/August issue out, other members of the team are packing up gear to take to the RMI Academy of Skills, where the finals are being held. All the information on the finals and on the Awards Dinner, is on pages 30-31. At this point we don’t know who has won, but when you read this you will know. We will have a full rundown in the September issue, which we start working on tomorrow. Back to the future and all that. When you are working on a monthly magazine, you do have to think ahead, more so in these days of instant news hits. One way to stay ahead is to keep an eye on what is coming down the road. With this in mind, we found Automechanika Birmingham 2019 particularly illuminating, as it gave us the chance to see everything under one roof. Our full review can be found on pages 48-53. It was the last chance to go to a UK Automechanika show until 2021, so we hope you were there too. Adam Bernstein is back this month, and looking at the ultimate future in the first of a two-part piece on the importance of business owners having a Will. That is on page 12. Staying ahead, Neil Pattemore is looking at what will shape the workshop of tomorrow, from a technical and legal perspective. That is on pages 14-15. Meanwhile, John Batten is providing a blueprint for technical, success on pages 24-25. While this is going on Frank Massey is looking at diesel another way. That is on pages 20-21. On top of that, we have features on brakes, oils and lubricants, cooling, garage equipment and the MOT. We also visit Top Technician semi finalist Craig Hewison at Monksbridge Garage. Lastly, we managed to find time to tell you about a rather pleasant lunch we had with VLS at the RAC Club recently. Ah, the halcyon past! Don’t forget, this is the July/August double issue. Aftermarket will hit your doormat again in September. Don’t fret if you miss us during the summer though, we will still be online at www.aftermarketonline.net , on Facebook, on Twitter etc. Also, it is worth mentioning, when we have a double issue it gives us much more time to get out and about. If you have something you think we should see, tell us and we will come to have a look. That gives us something to look forward to. Enjoy! Alex Wells Editor
