A nother year comes to an end, and another decade comes to an end, and then it all starts up again. On the cusp of the 2020s, we face a future where the aftermarket looks remarkably different than it did in the last few weeks of 2009. ADAS and the connected car would have caused puzzled looks, while the idea of hybrids as a mainstream option would have had some pushback, let alone electric cars. Yet, here we are. Change is the only constant, and it is only by moving forward that we can hope to succeed in a fast-evolving world. Platitudes aside, we would like to remind readers that Top Technician 2020 and Top Garage 2020 close at the start of 2020, so make sure you find some time to register and take the tests. Go to www.toptechnicianonline.co.uk for more information and to get started. And so, onto the rest of the magazine. Last issue, I pointed out Neil Currie’s prolific output of articles, which was putting his fellow contributors to shame. I issued a challenge, to see who could match him, and give me enough features to carry them through until the middle of next year. Some of my slow-and-steady regulars raised an ironic eyebrow, and I admitted this was done partly in jest. One of them really ran with it though, and I can confirm that Gareth Banks has matched and exceeded Neil’s record. Admittedly, he writes one-pagers where Neil is writing double-page spreads, but it is still a sterling effort. I declare this contest, a draw! Despite what the petrolhead end of our readership might think, speed isn’t everything. With this in mind, Frank Massey is taking us back for the second part of the VW Golf R mystery. Whodunnit? You will have to turn to pages 26-27 to find out. It’s must be our all-Golf issue, as on page 30, Darren Darling is looking a VW Golf TDI with DPF problems. Meanwhile, John Batten is looking at how having a Mastertech or two around can help your workshop, that’s on pages 24-25. Andy Savva is in this month too, but with a twist. We have given him a month off from the article treadmill, and instead opted to shadow him on one of his garage inspections. It’s a real eye-opener, and you can find it on pages 16-17. Also on the business front, Neil Pattemore is looking at the seven deadly sins of running a business. You can read that on pages 14-15. On our travels recently, we have managed to fit in a sit-down with Delphi Technologies SVP Alex Ashmore, as well as a visit to Northern Ireland to visit Top Technician 2019 runner up Declan Robinson. We also have a range of features, including fuel systems and cleaners, training and apprenticeships, winter checks and ADAS. Didn’t we already mention it is a new year in a few weeks’ time? If that has escaped your attention, head over to page 45 where you can enter the competition, where the prize is a LIQUI MOLY calendar. That might come in handy in 2020. Rounding up, we would like to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Aftermarket will be back in 2020 with the February issue. We will continue to keep you up to date via the website, the newsletter, on Twitter, Facebook, so look for us there… Enjoy!
