That means it must be time to pull the rug from under everyone. The government must think that way, having unilaterally decided to move forward its deadline for ending new diesel and petrol car sales from 2040 to 2035 and including hybrids too. Then, a week later, in an offhand way they chopped three more years off, and brought it forward again to 2032. Personally, I worry that if I go for a nap now, I might wake up and find that the internal combustion engine had been outlawed while I was asleep. It’s no way to plan anything, and it is going to cause greater uncertainty in an already shaky market. There needs to be more co-ordination with industry, and there needs to be a clear roadmap with regards to when the millions of charging points required are going to be put in place. A timetable of investment to go with the new deadline, and then the really, really new deadline would have been a good idea. What should garages be doing in this situation? The only advice we can give is to keep up with training and investment, and keep your options open. If you make sure you can continue serving your community, whatever they drive, then you are doing the right thing. One thing we can be certain of is that Top Technician and Top Garage 2020 are continuing to challenge individual techs and whole businesses across the country. Both competitions are fully underway now. You can find out what is going on here in the magazine, as well as via www.aftermarketonline.net and through www.toptechnicianonline.co.uk . Have you booked your place at the Top Technician and Top Garage Awards Evening, taking place on Saturday 20 June, yet? If not, do it soon! We have a piece looking at what it takes to succeed in both competitions on page 36. Take a look. Speaking of Top Technician and Top Garage 2020, sponsors TechMan are in the issue with a very interesting piece looking at training. That is on page 34. Onto the rest of the issue. On the technical side, Frank Massey is on pages 28- 29, talking diesel diagnostics. Meanwhile, for balance on pages 26-27 John Batten is looking at what challenges EVs and hybrids present to the workshop. Back on page 24, Gareth Banks is rounding up (do you like the pun?) his series on tyres. Lastly, process is the watch-word for Neil Currie on pages 30-31 On the business side, Andy Savva has taken some time to consider the impact of third-party work providers, and whether they are a friend or ultimately a foe. That is on pages 18-19. On pages 14-16, Neil Pattemore is covering the General Safety Protection Regulation, or GSPR for short. We are also looking at what’s happening around recalls in Big Issue on pages 8- 11, while our features cover turbos, vehicle electronics and engine management, EVs and hybrids and ignition. We also found time to visit Harrogate to pop into Carmaster for a garage visit. Enjoy!
