For the former, that means the techs who displayed the greatest knowledge in round one will continue to be tested in round two, before more are eliminated in round three, on the way to identifying the 10 who will be in the semi final. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. Meanwhile, over in Top Garage, the best businesses from the first round face a three-part second round, which will help identify those who are taking part in the semi final, in which they face a mystery shop and all manner of other challenges. The purpose of the competitions is to identify the best individuals and organisations operating in the industry. By definition that means not everyone can go through. We know you wouldn’t want it any other way, but if you didn’t get through for one or both competition in 2020, you might be wondering how to make sure it is you making it all the way to the end next year, or the year after that. The answer, of course, is process. For technicians, be in the habit of learning, taking notes, creating connections that show you a path to success. Even in the early online rounds, where we are probing your knowledge, that database in your head will be even more effective if you have the right application and the approach to everything you encounter. Organise it effectively in your head, and when working in the workshop, have a solid routine that is used for all problems that will mean you are doing it all the right way. The same thing applies for those running the business. If your garage has structures and procedures in place, it will run more efficiently. If everyone in the organisation is playing their part, and you as the owner or manager can rely on that, then the business will run most effectively. When applied to Top Garage, if your business is set up in the right way, you will already have the answers you need. Well, that’s the theory. Of course with Top Technician and Top Garage, you never know who will come out on top, until they do. In the end, it all comes down to participation.
