You have said before that sometimes the DPF is not the underlying cause of the problem but the consequence of another. As mentioned previously each vehicle is taken on an individual basis. A customer’s answers to the questionnaire builds a picture of how their car is being used and maintained. We then move to The DPF Doctor Assessment. During this we confirm faults, log live data, and carry out manual checks on the vehicle. We do this before cleaning the DPF. If we don’t identify the underlying faults the DPF will simply block again. The fault could be anything from driving style to a faulty sensor. Assessment complete, we report back to the customer and speak about the costs and the best way to proceed. This can be an interesting conversation if the customer has experienced poor advice in the past or taken to Google to read up on DPFs! They don’t really understand how the system works. With our step by step approach we build confidence in our customer so they can see that what we’re advising will fix their car. Q. Which JLM Lubricants’ products do you use to turn a fully blocked or partially blocked DPF into a clean DPF? Are they easy to use? Do you need specialist training? We use a wide range of JLM Lubricants’ DPF products. Again, which product to use comes down to what we find during the assessment. If we find a DPF that is slightly outside of its specification, a can of the JLM Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner along with an extended road test is an excellent way to bring the DPF back in line to the specification. On the other hand, we get vehicles that are in non-start conditions because the DPF is so badly blocked. In these cases, we use the JLM Cleaning Flush Pack. This is injected directly into the DPF using the JLM DPF Toolkit – while the DPF is still fitted to the car. This saves on labour costs because the DPF doesn’t have to be removed. No need to buy expensive kit or send the vehicle to a specialist. Mechanics can take on DPF business with these products. We always advise our customers on the importance of prevention. For this the JLM DPF Regen Plus is a good in tank additive to use every 7-8 weeks. The products and professional toolkit are simple to use and little training is required. I have been a member of The DPF Doctor network for nearly four years. It has been hugely beneficial to my entire business – not just working on DPF systems.
