Once a mechanic has diagnosed a contaminated injector, they can look at removing the offending part and replacing it with a new or refurbished one. Refurbishing is a specialist job which usually entails sending the faulty injector away. However, if the damage is not terminal, using a dedicated GDI Injector Cleaner, such as the J03170 from JLM, can restore injector function and help prevent further contamination – without having to remove the injector. The inherent flaw of GDI injector technology means that an ongoing preventative regime using an effective injector cleaner additive will avoid carbon issues going forward. This is what he told us: “At D.V.S Tuning in Folkestone Kent, we have been performing controlled dyno testing using the JLM GDI injector cleaner on our VW Golf GTI 2.0 TSI development car with 114,000 miles on the clock. We ran the car up on our Dimsport dyno several times in stock form to log a consistent pre-test reference point, also measuring AFR. We then applied 1 x JLM GDI Injector cleaner and ran it through for approximately 15 miles on the dyno under light load. We then ran the car up again keeping the same atmospheric and vehicle conditions as much as possible, referencing the data logs we recorded initially and using our fans to create the same ambient temperature in the test cell. The results showed it [JLM GDI Injector Cleaner] helped in restoring power/torque with overall peak gains of 4 BHP and 3NM increases but more importantly, mid- range (2500 rpm) torque of 18 NM. Logs taken of ARF using our Dimsport probe kit also showed a more stable ratio from a pre-test measure of 15.8 to a post-test measure of 14.7 – the ideal ratio for optimum combustion.
