Lumileds was set up to manufacture and bring to market Philips Automotive Lighting products globally. As an OE supplier of lighting on every third car sold in Europe, excellence and best practice are not simply concepts but are the guiding forces by which the company has to work. A tour of the Lumileds factory and the application centre in Aachen Germany, where, every day large numbers of Philips bulbs are produced, tested and further developed, is an eye-opening experience. The product at the end of the manufacturing process may only retail at a few pounds, but it will have gone through dozens of checks along the way, at any of which it could be rejected, if it falls outside the tight parametres required.
