JUNE 2021 AFTERMARKET 33 www.aftermarketonline.net the most successful drivers from the heats start at the back. Races are short, 10 to 15 minutes, and action-packed as drivers work their way through the pack. There are more overtakes in a single Legends race than you’re likely to see in a whole year of F1. Bump and draft Legends is the only circuit series in the UK that permits contact. The cars are deliberately non aerodynamic. This allows any following car to use the draft (the hole in the air) to follow and push the car in front. All cars are fitted with bumpers front and rear to allow the car in front to be physically pushed. Two cars draughting like this can therefore slingshot past a single car. You’ll often see faster rivals working together to get to the front of the pack, before engaging in a furious final lap solo battle to reach the finishing line. Common problems The close nature of Legends racing means there is often a bent bumper or damaged bodywork at the end of a race. But these are designed to be unbolted and replaced quickly. The chassis/cage is exceptionally strong, and even a car that has been rolled or involved in a heavy accident can be straightened and back on track in a couple of hours. Each car is permitted three engines per season. These high-revving bike engines are light and powerful but inevitably the strain of pushing them to their limit results in failures including valve damage, overheating, electrical issues, and sometimes total engine failure. However, the simplicity of the design means that a team of experienced race mechanics can swap out an engine in 30 minutes. Top five race team tools The top tools are as follows: 1. A big hammer: On a car as simple as a Legend sometimes the best way to fix a spot of damage swiftly is to give it a good whack with a big hammer! 2.Gaffer Tape: A roll of gaffer tape is perfect for emergency repairs to fiberglass bodywork 3. JLM Engine Oil Flush: Frequent oil changes are essential to help protect and prolong the life of a race engine.
