Aftermarket May 2022

A ftermarket recently met up with Tareq Khateeb, Global Manager Product Management and Marketing Data Aftermarket, BorgWarner Emissions Thermal and Turbo Systems, to cover the growing role of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) modules. BorgWarner has been highlighting the important role played by EGR valves recently. Why are they so key to the system? BorgWarner provides compact and highly efficient solutions reducing fuel consumption and the associated CO2 emissions, including EGR modules, valves and coolers. As a product leader, we are uniquely positioned to produce all EGR components, allowing us to design and develop fully integrated EGR systems. BorgWarner offers a broad portfolio of genuine BorgWarner EGR valves for the aftermarket. Both stand for premium quality. This means that these parts are of the same quality as the original issue used by automakers. Needless to say, our spare parts come with the same service life and operational reliability. In order to maintain compliance with the increasing stringency of exhaust emissions levels without impairing engine performance, EGR is one of the most frequently used technologies for reducing the environmental burden of exhaust pollutants. As such, it ensures the reduction of harmful nitrous oxides and soot particulates. By supplying EGR valves and flaps specifically designed to meet attendant requirements, we are making our contribution to environmentally friendly engine technology. Can you explain the different types on the market? Electrical EGR valves: Designed to control the exhaust gas recirculation volume on the basis of a pre-set electrical setpoint value, electrical EGR valves take their instructions either from a system of control electronics or 28 AFTERMARKET MAY 2022 TECHNICAL www.aftermarketonline.net EGR: Q&A WITH BORGWARNER Aftermarket has been speaking to one of the experts from BorgWarner about EGR valves, and the important role they play in modern engines Above: Tareq Khateeb, Global Manager Product Management and Marketing Data Aftermarket, BorgWarner Emissions Thermal and Turbo Systems a simple position sensor. Electrical EGR flap valves: Designed to control the exhaust gas recirculation volume on the basis of a nominal electrical value, these valves can be supplied complete with control electronics or equipped with a position sensor, as required by a specific application. Pneumatic EGR valves: Control the exhaust gas recirculation volume by means of a pre-set pneumatic setpoint value. Electrical throttle flap : On diesel engines, and with a pre-set electrical setpoint value, these devices serve to increase the exhaust gas return volume, the removal of NOx from diesel particulates, and to dampen the engine shutoff "slap". Pneumatic bypass flaps: Directing the exhaust gas flow either directly through the EGR cooler or past the same through the bypass, these control devices are located upstream of a variety of cooler designs.
