D avid Eszenyi, Commercial Director at Ivor Searle said: “Demand for turbochargers continues to grow as this technology has become commonplace in the vehicle parc. Alongside the proliferation of turbocharged diesel cars and LCVs, we are also seeing an increase in demand for turbos on petrol vehicles, reflecting the introduction of more compact and efficient gasoline powertrains. The extensive use of turbos across all segments has also resulted in the number of applications increasing significantly.” Commonplace On why turbos fail, David noted: “Contamination, resulting in problems such as restriced oil supply, is one of the main causes of turbo failure. Particles from incomplete combustion can build up in the turbo over time, causing faults such as the vanes sticking in variable geometry tubos. This initially results in power loss and can eventually lead to component failure. Contamination can also be sent upstream into the turbo due to problems exhaust system, such as blocked or restricted DPF. Physical damage to the turbo can also occur due to debris being ingested into the compressor housing, damaging the 42 AFTERMARKET MARCH 2023 TURBOS www.aftermarketonline.net turbo’s compressor blades.“ Looking at the reman turbo market, David added: “As a remanufacturer, Ivor Searle offers workshops an all makes programme which covers over 90% of the UK’s car and LCV parc and we’re constantly expanding our range to meet demand for specific applications. For example, we have just added 34 new applications for a number of BMW, Hyundai, Kia and Mini diesel models, as well as turbos for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ford, Jeep and Vauxhall vehicles.“ For more information, visit: www.ivorsearle.co.uk Lubrication Lubrication is one of the most important elements that helps keep a turbocharger running properly, there are many ways in which oil related issues can damage components. Fortunately there are many steps a technician can take to make sure a turbo stays in tip-top condition. Melett Product Manager Tom Wright observed: “It is essential to check that a vehicle’s oil is the correct grade. When fitting a replacement turbo, it is important that the oil system has been primed and is in full working order. If this is not the case, it can lead to premature failure.” Bad oil is a big problem in this regard, as Tom said: “Dirty oil, often referred to as ‘oil contamination’, is one of the top Above: Pro-Line Turbocharger Additive from LIQUI MOLY A MIGHTY WIND Once a niche item, in recent years turbos have gone mainstream in car engines; Find out how to ride the currents
