Aftermarket December/January 2024

Luke Garratt, UK and Nordics Technical Services Manager at Delphi commented: “ADAS calibration will soon become as normal as changing brake pads and represents a golden opportunity for independent garages, particularly as vehicles begin to fall outside their warranty period. “Even the seemingly simple procedures like tracking adjustments now require ADAS calibration. The latest breed of LED and laser headlights rely on a carefully calibrated camera, as well as sound wheel alignment, to selectively dim the beam pattern for oncoming traffic.” “Take a typical 2019 Volkswagen Golf. It comes equipped with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, auto-braking and predictive pedestrian protection. These systems are already in the aftermarket in big numbers.” It would seem the opportunity is there for the taking, bit as Luke pointed out, ADAS diagnosis and repair frequently necessitates ‘pass-thru’ capability. He observed: “This is effectively an OEM-monitored network to ensure vehicle control modules remain secure against hackers and are correctly configured. Should a forward-facing camera require replacement, for example, pass-thru capability is required to recalibrate it. Components are no longer ‘plugand-play’. Fitting a new unit often requires registration and resetting the relevant ECU via the OEM pass-thru portal. Authorised access is the only way to update an ECU when a 42 AFTERMARKET DECEMBER/JANUARY 2024 ADAS www.aftermarketonline.net component is replaced, and to remove any fault codes that may be present.” On how Delphi’s offering can help, Luke said: “The Delphi DS and Bluetech vehicle communication interface (VCI) both support pass-thru and provide a convenient dashboard for accessing the necessary ‘tokens’ on most popular OEM systems including VAG Group, BMW, MINI, Vauxhall, Chevrolet (Europe), Toyota, Lexus, Jaguar Land Rover and Ford. Delphi offers free e-learning courses for software licence holders, with each module gaining participants IMI CPD credits. Luke continued: “These systems are complex. So, we aim to provide a complete solution to workshop technicians. The relationship doesn’t stop when they buy the diagnostic tool, it’s really the starting point and we’re seeing growing uptake over time on the Delphi Academy e-learning platform where technicians can check or improve their knowledge at any time. Training includes an introductory overview on ADAS before moving onto an in-depth explanation of its functions and features and how ADAS connected lighting systems work on the road.” He added: “Training also covers a step-by-step guide on how to calibrate ADAS systems using the Delphi CRC 150 equipment. Alongside its electric vehicle training, ADAS remains to be Delphi’s most in-demand course.” ADAS: A GOOD IDEA Garages that can’t accommodate ADAS repairs could be missing out on a major income stream Above: Hofmann Megaplan Digital ADAS Unit in operation
