56 April 2019 www.drivesncontrols.com n DESIGN DATA AND MULTIMEDIA Gambica has published a guide to lifting low-voltage power switchgear and controlgear assemblies. Before the BS EN 61439 series of standards was published in 2009, there was no requirement to demonstrate that an assembly was safe to lift. The onus fell on assembly manufacturers to demonstrate suitability, often by certification in accordance with Loler – and, earlier, with the Docks Regulations. BS EN 61439 includes a requirement to verify, by testing, the safe lifting and manoeuvring of assemblies that have a provision for lifting. There has been some confusion around the requirements to show evidence of a safe lift, and the lifting facilities provided by assembly manufacturers, including the application of safe working loads and the need to serialise and certify each facility. The guide looks as what this means and what is expected of those responsible for conducting a safe lift. It can be downloaded freely from Gambica’s Web site. www.gambica.org.uk Book tells the story of EtherNet/IP and how to use it Industrial automation expert John Rinaldi, who founded Real Time Automation in the US, has released a book titled The Everyman’s Guide to EtherNet/IP: The Industry’s Leading Automation Protoco l, which explains how and why EtherNet/IP was conceived, and recounts its rise in the automation world. It’s also a hands-on handbook on the technology and how it compares with other technologies such as Modbus TCP and Profinet. The 153-page book, Rinaldi’s seventh on industrial automation, is available from Amazon for around £12.23. For a limited time, you can also download the first three chapters by visiting the Real Time Automation Web site. www.rtautomation.com . IIC publishes guide for assessing the maturity of IOT system security The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) has published a guide for IoT users to assess and manage the security maturity of their systems. The Security Maturity Model (SMM) Practitioner’s Guide describes what must be done to reach a given security comprehensiveness for each security domain, subdomain and practice, and can be extended to address specific industry needs. Use cases demonstrate how an organisation can pick a target state or evaluate a current state. IIC has also updated its White Paper, IoT SMM: Description and Intended Use , which introduces the concepts and approach of the SMM. The updated paper is now consistent with the Guide, including revised diagrams and updated terminology. www.iiconsortium.org Brochure describes vertical form fill seal belts Transdev is offering a brochure on its UK-made Transgrip range of toothed timing belts for packaging applications. The drawdown belts (vertical form fill seal) have a backing on the top surface to help to make bags from vertical drawdown film. The belts are available with rubber or polyurethane base belts, and are an alternative to OEM replacement belts. They are available from stock and to custom order. Recent additions include TNA monorail belts with high-gloss red silicone coatings. Precision- ground covers give consistent thickness. A range of bidirectional seamless backings are available, offering a consistent grip. info@transdev.co.uk www.transdev.co.uk Mouser Electronics has released a video of an hour-long panel discussion, led by celebrity engineer Grant Imahara, on “How robotics will shape our future”. The panel discusses the frontiers of robotics with a focus on how they are causing us to rethink the way we live and work. The panellists are: Professor Ayanna Howard of the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology; Professor Magnus Egerstedt of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology; and Dominik Boesl, vice-president, senior corporate innovation manager and technical fellow at KUKA Robotics. The discussion took place at Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) Executive Conference in the US. https://youtu.be/HiJ1pq3E-dg IF YOU’RE READING THIS, THEN SO ARE 60,000+ ENGINEERS IMAGINE THE IMPACT YOUR ADVERT COULD HAVE Contact us at Drives & Controls Damien Oxlee T +44 (0) 1732 370342 M +44 (0) 7951 103754 damien.oxlee@dfamedia.co.uk Andy Wylie T +44 (0) 1732 370341 M +44 (0)7939 607855 andy.wylie@dfamedia.co.uk www.drivesncontrols.com Drives & Controls
