63 NEW PRODUCTS n Sick has unveiled a new generation of smart 2D photoelectric light array sensors to detect difficult-to- see objects on high-speed conveyors. The Ray10 and Ray26 reflex array sensors create a wide 2D light band to detect the leading edges of objects, even when they not clearly defined, are transparent, or are only a few millimetres high – such as polybags, flat packaging and parcels. The sensors deliver accurate detection results, even for irregularly-shaped, randomly positioned, shiny or high-contrast objects, or those that vary in height or colour. They can also detect perforated objects without false tripping or the need to program multiple switching operations. The sensors are said to achieve high levels of performance in a fraction of the space and set-up time needed for complex multi- sensor arrays or light grids. The Ray26 has three variants to detect objects ≥3mm, ≥5mm or ≥10mm within a 55mm light array with a sensing range of 0– 4.5m. It offers optional suppression to compensate for vertical movement of the conveyor, through a stepped deactivation of the zone between the conveyor and the array. The smaller Ray10 detects objects ≥5mm within a 25mm light array with a response time of 0.5ms and a maximum sensing range of 1.5m. Installation and commissioning is said to be made easy by using an LED technology that makes the light array clearly visible, allowing the sensors to be aligned accurately. A simple teach-in process completes the set-up. The sensor settings can be adjusted via IO-Link according to the object size and the conveyor conditions, reducing the need for time-consuming manual intervention during commissioning and operation. A bargraph indicator shows the level of dirt build- up on the sensor lens and reflector. The sensors adjust their sensitivity automatically to compensate for contamination, thus extending maintenance intervals. The sensor status can be communicated via IO-Link to the PLC, allowing cleaning to be scheduled without unnecessary downtime. The TEP boxes are suitable for applications where there are space constraints – typically machines with high axis counts, such as slitters and winders, printing and packaging machines. There are four frame sizes – 55, 75, 90, and 120 – in one- and two-stage configurations. The single- stage versions offer ratios from 3:1 to 10:1, and two- stage versions from 12:1 to 100:1. Backlash is 12–17 arc- minutes for the single-stage, and 15–20 arc-minutes for the two-stage versions. Efficiencies are 94% for the single-stage type, and 91% for the two-stage versions. Noise levels are 65–70dB at 3,000rpm input speed. The output torque is up to 180Nm nominal, 290Nm peak, with an e-stop torque of 600Nm. The gearboxes are flange- compatible with Tramec’s EP series gearboxes and offer alternative shaft and output flange options.
