57 www.drivesncontrols.com April 2020 MACHINE VISION n players including IDS Imaging, Teledyne Dalsa, Keyence, Omron, Sick and Laon People. IDS and Teledyne have released machine vision systems that use deep learning, while Keyence, Omron and Sick have ventured into the embedded camera market via partnerships with collaborative and autonomous mobile robotics companies. In total, ABI ranked 12 machine vision sensor and camera vendors using an “unbiased innovation/implementation criteria framework”. The others included Baumer, Framos and TKH. ABI says that by targeting expanding niche markets such as robotics and autonomous vehicles, vision companies can generate revenue growth beyond traditional machine vision markets such as electronics and automotive manufacturing. In its early days, machine vision relied on rule- based programming, requiring human expertise. The recent emergence of deep learning technology has propelled the automation of such processes. DL models can pick up trends and abnormalities in large sets of images, with a low level of human involvement. Another interesting development, according to ABI, is the rise of independent machine vision cameras with built-in edge AI processors. Traditional machine vision systems have centralised processing architectures based on industrial PCs. “However, as the use cases for machine vision expand into mobile devices and surveillance systems, a new generation of machine vision systems are designed to work as a standalone system, supported by onboard storage for AI-based machine vision models,” Su reports.“This has led to the emergence of an AI solution that can auto-generate images and perform self-learning, without the need of large amounts of user data – as in the case of the start-up, Laon People.” n * For details of the report, Machine Vision in Industrial Applications , visit http://machines.vision/industrial6 Global shipments and installed base of industrial vision sensors and cameras 2018–2025.
