April 2021

In following the mountaineering analogy the Summit was supported by a series of base camp events that took place throughout January, February and early March. These 45-minute webinars each focused on a particular theme such as building high- performing teams, creating energy, drive and resilience in the workforce, effective leadership, how to benefit from new and emerging technologies, the importance of supply chains and the role of finance to provide the oxygen for future business plans to succeed. Speakers from high profile organisations supported the events, including Williams Racing, Rolls Royce, Meggitt, Warwick Manufacturing Group and Lloyds Banking Group. Inspiration also came in the form of some excellent speakers from outside the sector, including the great British explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and Mandy Hickson, the former RAF combat pilot who talked about the importance of leadership to navigate challenging situations. In each case, these individual events further supported the build-up to reaching the ‘summit’as the main event approached on March 16th. A strong speaker line-up designed to inform and inspire The final speaker list for the event was both extensive and diverse, with notable contributions from inspirational leaders from within and beyond the sector, many of whom have had to overcome personal and professional challenges to achieve their successes. The event was headlined by the UK’s greatest living explorer and a man that has literally scaled many mountains. Sir Ranulph Fiennes epitomises the need for absolute focus in scaling any summit. During his keynote address, he drew a series of parallels between his own experience of planning and preparation, team building and goal setting, and the similar outlook needed now by the manufacturing sector as it climbs its own summit, to secure future growth and economic prosperity. The event was also fortunate to include contributions fromministers from Westminster and all three devolved governments, alongside an extensive list of business leaders, senior engineers and technologists, local government officials, funding agencies and membership bodies. Plans are already under way for 2022 with a determination to analyse the recent event, collating all the feedback and building on its success for when the event returns next year. The intention is for the 2022 Summit to be a hybrid event, consisting of face-to- face conferences and workshops at MTC’s home in Warwickshire, alongside the live broadcasting of sessions to many thousands across the UK and internationally.
