www.drivesncontrols.com September 2021 53 EDS PREVIEW n EDS returns to the same venue with a new name T he Engineering Design Show – described as the UK’s only event dedicated to engineering, electronics and embedded design – returns next month to the former Ricoh Arena in Coventry, now known as the Coventry Building Society Arena. The event includes an exhibition where around 150 companies will be showcasing cutting-edge innovations and best practice, as well as three separate conferences consisting of more than 55 sessions spread over the two days of the show, and a series of practical workshops. The conference sessions will include speakers from Rolls Royce, Airbus, IBM, McLaren , the AMRC and other organisations. In addition, the show will see the launch of the Springboard awards, which aim to encourage engineering start-ups and entrepreneurs. Supported by McLaren Automotive , the awards will give early- stage companies a platform to share their innovations with thousands of engineering professionals with the power to influence and guide them. They will also be able to enter a competition to win a free stand at next year’s show as well as marketing support, together said to be worth £10,000. The exhibitors at EDS 2021 will include: Arrow Electronics in partnership with Analog Devices, Binder, Dunkermotoren, EMS, Elmo, Harmonic Drive, Harwin, Heidenhain, Hirose Electric Europe, Hitaltech, IKO Nippon Thompson, Innovative Sensor Technology, maxon motor, Otter Controls, Panasonic ElectricWorks UK, Piezo Motion, RDP Electronics, Schurter Electronics, TDK-Lambda, Tektronix UK, TÜV SÜD Product Service, Wurth Electronics and Yokogawa Test & Measurement . Among the topics to be discussed during the EDS conference sessions are: the engineering challenges of net-zero; how engineers are helping to address urgent healthcare challenges; the future of vehicle electrification; why it is time to bring intelligence to edge; building the digital foundations of modern connected factories; Europe’s first 3D-printed vehicle; and how DC motors are being used on Mars. In one session, Prof Rab Scott, head of digital at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Sheffield, will discuss some of the technologies that he believes will revolutionise the world of manufacturing in the coming months and years. Elsewhere, a speaker from Siemens consider creating digital twins with closed-loop feedback. The workshop sessions will cover a variety of topics including: IoT device security and certification; motorised medical implants; how energy battery storage can accelerate the rollout of an EV charging infrastructure; and whether a magician can fool a machine- learning system. “We have a stellar line-up of speakers and exhibitors for EDS 2021,” says Engineering Design Show event director, Gordon Kirk. “We are particularly excited to hear in our new Springboard event how start-ups and early-stage businesses will help forge the future of the industry. “Over the course of two very interesting and information-packed days,”he adds,“speakers from across the industry will explore some of the key design engineering trends, technologies and projects that are transforming the wider world. We’re certain they will provide some inspiring examples of how engineers are driving the development of cleaner forms of energy generation, sustainable mobility solutions, innovative manufacturing systems and medical technologies that can help address the challenges posed by an ageing population.” n After a two-year Covid-enforced absence, the Engineering Design Show will return next month to its regular venue in Coventry, which has a new name. As well as 150 exhibitors, the event will include more than 55 conference sessions as well as a series of practical workshops.
