The function block contains the complete sequence program for a burner controller. Each individual step is executed safely – from purging of the combustion chamber before ignition, through to detecting the flame within a fixed time interval. The device can control and monitor up to 12 burners independently. It also supports project design, configuration, documentation and commissioning of the controller. The controllers can not only control and monitor furnaces, but also plant-dependent safety functions such as emergency stops or safety gates. Bühler is now using the PNOZmulti 2 to carry out tasks previously performed by separate burner controllers. A single device controls and monitors up to six burners independently – previously a separate controller was required for each one. “The biggest advantage for us is that we can now standardise all the safety technology for our machines – functional safety and burner control – with a single system,” says Grassberger. The safety controllers can be connected to higher-level automation systems via communication modules available for all common fieldbus and Ethernet systems. Status and diagnostic data generated by the controllers can be incorporated into visualisation systems, allowing the current state of each burner to be displayed in individual steps and analysed in detail. Error messages are shown in plain text. “That is a real milestone for us and represents clear added value for our customers,” Grassberger explains. “The days when you had to read and interpret codes from flashing LEDs are well and truly over.” The burner safety controller has also opened up retrofit applications, replacing older burner controllers without comms capabilities. Bühler has already upgraded some outdated burner controllers on existing installations. “Our systems often operate for decades. So the availability of spares is just as much an issue as safety,” Grassberger points out. “In this respect, it makes total sense to modernise using up-to-date safety technology.” Bühler is working with Pilz on further modularisation of the burner controllers with up to 24 single burners controlled individually. n Unusually shaped producs can be developed at Buhler’s Wafer Innovation Centre Images: Pilz/ Bühler
