News 0 8 | Plant & Works Engineering www.pwemag.co.uk September 2019 Sir David Brown has been appointed as chairman of The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) with effect from October 1, 2019. Sir David Brings a wealth of experience to the MTC following a distinguished career in telecommunications and electronics, including chairman of Motorola Ltd and chairman of BSI. Sir David is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Chartered Engineer and a past president of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Commenting on the MTC, Sir David said: “I have been greatly impressed by the contribution that the MTC has made to UK manufacturing and I am very much looking forward to joining the Board as the MTC embarks on the next phase of its development.” Sir David succeeds Alex Stephenson CBE, who has been instrumental in guiding the MTC through a period of unprecedented growth for the organisation, while at the same time delivering considerable productivity benefits to manufacturing companies across several sectors. Speaking on behalf of the Board, chief executive Dr Clive Hickman said:”I would like to thank Alex Stephenson for his unwavering support for the MTC during his tenure. He has been a fantastic advocate for Great British manufacturing. “I am looking forward to working with Sir David, as we embark on the next stage of our remarkable journey.” Northern Manufacturing & Electronics 2019 returns to Manchester’s EventCity, from October 2nd to October 3rd. Around 250 firms are expected to participate in the 2019 event, delivering a selection of vendors, from major machinery manufacturers to local subcontract engineering services. Following the same format of its long- established sibling event, Southern Manufacturing, the Northern show has developed its own profile, very much reflecting the character of manufacturing industry in the North. Aerospace and automotive are two of the biggest areas of activity, which along with their associated supply chains, make the show relevant for both buyers and vendors. Alongside the hardware and services on show, Northern Manufacturing 2019 also has a range of free technical seminar programme, which runs over both days. Highlights of the 2019 include sessions by award winning author, creator of the Lean Iceberg Model and partner at S.A. Partners, Gary Griffiths. Along with co-authors Professor Peter Hines, Pauline Found and Richard Harrison, Gary’s book “Staying Lean:Thriving, Not Just Surviving” won a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize in 2009 for its illustration of the experience of a multi-national company that successfully implemented Lean in its manufacturing and commercial operations. Andy Brunskill, Author of “TPM: A Foundation of Operational Excellence” will share his 11 step Model which can be used to deploy an effective, systematic Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) programme. Further sessions include advice on government incentives, mergers and acquisitions, CE marking, 3D print technology and advanced composite materials among others.
