Aftermarket Magazine May 2024

MAY 2024 AFTERMARKET 63 www.aftermarketonline.net Schaeffler’s REPXPERT team visited Newcastle upon Tyne VAG specialists Tyneside AutoHaus recently to offer training on an INA timing belt installation. Alistair Mason, Technical Services Manager at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket UK, showed how to replace the timing belt system on a customer’s EA288 engine, which can be a problematic service. The engine features a switchable water pump that has been the subject of a number of technical bulletins from the part-maker. While the INA pump includes the solenoid, a number of other aftermarket examples come with the solenoid plug socket blanked off. As Alistair noted, the repair requires finesse: “It’s really important before tensioning the belt that both the camshaft and high-pressure fuel pump sprockets are slackened to ensure the right tension on all three spans of the belt. Only once the tension is set do we then retorque these pulleys, as failure to do this correctly can result in catastrophic engine failure.” On how the garage uses Schaeffler’s REPXPERT app to identify parts and access technical information, including installation instructions, Tyneside Autohaus Service Manager Fergus Carnegie observed: “We’ve been using the REPXPERT app for a few years and it really does make things easier. You just scan the OneCode on the box and it does the rest for you.” Tyneside AutoHaus is also looking to keep up with training: “We know we can't stop,” said Fergus. “We've done a two-day high voltage course. We were working on a hybrid Audi Q7 recently and more customers are looking to go to hybrids.” Alistair Mason added: “It's great to get the opportunity to talk to the garages and understand exactly what's going on at the coalface. With REPXPERT it’s all about supporting independent garages as without the garages thriving, we don't thrive either.” Coals to Newcastle: Schaeffler run training on Tyneside Places on Cleevely Group’s all-new ‘At Ease With EV’ training course are available now. The course kicked at with an initial day at the beginning of April at the Cleevely EV training facility in Cheltenham. More sessions are set to place in July and October. The hands-on high voltage course aims to build the confidence of technicians who already hold IMI Level 2, 3, or 4 qualifications but do not have the opportunity to practice their EV skills in their workshop on a regular basis. Delegates undertake practical tasks including interlocks, charging faults, high voltage battery testing and repairs, EV servicing and common EV faults. A Tesla service mode ‘deep-dive’ demonstration will also take place Commenting on the courses, Founder and CEO of Cleevely Group, Matt Cleevely said: "As EVs become increasingly common on our roads, it's essential for technicians to feel competent in the servicing and repairing of them. This new course provides an invaluable opportunity for technicians to refresh and update their expertise through practical workshop experience on a 2018 Nissan Leaf and Tesla Y Performance.” Training is undertaken by Matt himself, alongside and technical trainer Alistair Finch. Lunch and refreshments are also provided, along with a certificate of attendance, which counts towards CPD. The next sessions are being held on Saturday 20 July, and Saturday 20 October. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis for just £295 + VAT per delegate. Register for the course online here: https://forms.gle/cvX9QjQ7o5cY1PpM6.
