38 AFTERMARKET APRIL 2021 ADAS www.aftermarketonline.net T he rules and requirements around ADAS are tightening, and garages that want to take advantage need to have the knowledge, training and equipment in place. With as many as 4.5m cars equipped with ADAS on the road in the UK in 2020, the increasingly specific rules provide a framework for garages to focus their investment in this area. Last year, the EU provisionally agreed to make ADAS compulsory on all new vehicles from 2022. If that’s not enough, ADAS insurance industry requirements (IRR) that specifically apply to garages came into force on 31 March. The regulations, from Thatcham Research, establish the key steps repairers must follow to ensure that ADAS continue to function as they did prior to needing adjustment. The IIR, the details of which were published by Thatcham Research in July 2020, stipulates that technicians must consider the inspection, realignment and calibration requirements in all situations where ADAS sensors, or parts likely to affect the operation and functionality of ADAS sensors vehicle geometry, are included within the repair, service or maintenance procedure. Explaining why Hella Gutmann Solutions (HGS) welcomes IRR implementation, Head of HGS Neil Hilton said: “The implementation of the IIR is fantastic news for the whole repair sector. It is clear that under the terms of the IIR, the responsibility to ensure that the vehicle’s ADAS equipment is functioning correctly does not lie with the vehicle’s owner or the VM that originally incorporated them, but with the workshop that carries out any work that will in any way affect the ADAS functionality. However, equipped with the HGS CSC- Tool/SE and following our IMI accredited training, the independent workshop is fully prepared to tackle this work with complete confidence, and benefit from the considerable rewards that ADAS technology also makes possible.” Support According to Phil Mitchell, Training Manager, Delphi Technologies Aftermarket UK, there is still a lot of wariness in the sector when it comes to ADAS, both from the equipment standpoint and in terms of information: “From those that have attended our IMI-accredited course – which has fast become one of our most in-demand modules – the biggest query is that they want to know when they might have to carry out an ADAS recalibration and, importantly, how they can properly understand it so that they have the confidence to explain to a customer about why the cost of a standard maintenance job now carries an extra cost due to the additional recalibration work.” Phil continued: “The perfect solution is the car telling technicians that a Above: ADAS calibration kit from Delphi Technologies LET’S GET SERIOUS New requirements and legislation mean you need to take ADAS seriously to make the most of the opportunity
