Drives & Controls Magazine July/August 2023

62 July/August 2023 www.drivesncontrols.com n DESIGN DATA AND MULTIMEDIA The Association of Electrical and Mechanical Trades (AEMT) has published a free guide to help calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) of industrial motors. It outlines the factors that need to be considered when calculating TCOs and how to reduce them. Topics include using VSDs, motor efficiency and boosting reliability. Today's high energy costs mean that the lifetime costs of running motors are increasing. But TCOs are not always considered when buying. “We have produced this guide to encourage a focus on the TCO of electric motors, to help users reduce their costs and improve their environmental impact,” says the AEMT’s secretary and general manager, Thomas Marks. https://bit.ly/AEMT_TCO Revamped Web site enhances user experience HepcoMotion, the linear motion and automation components supplier, has updated its Web site, offering an improved user experience, and making it easier for visitors to navigate and access information. There is a new product selector for choosing products in a few clicks, and a configurator for Hepco’s GV3 & SL2 products, allowing customers to input key application parameters to obtain custom systems. The site includes case studies, technical articles, FAQs, animations and videos. A responsive design provides an optimised viewing experience across devices such as desktops, tablets and mobile phones. www.hepcomotion.com Infographic highlights regulatory changes for motors and drives WEG has produced an infographic outlining the recent changes to the EU’s ecodesign legislation for electric motors. The legislation (EU2019/1781), which came into effect on 1 July, aims to reduce the environmental impact of motors and VSDs by raising efficiency requirements. The downloadable infographic outlines the obligations for manufacturers of motors and drives, the scope of the regulation, and what end-users need to know. It covers the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) scoring system, as well as minimum efficiency levels for electric motors and VSDs. It also reveals the types of equipment covered by the regulation for the first time. https://drivesncontrols.news/vyrnvh Video series offers interviews with automation leaders Rockwell Automation has released more than 70 video interviews with manufacturing leaders, highlighting trends in digital transformation, IIoT, cloud, sustainability, augmented reality and industrial security. The interviews, part of the ROKStudios series, include discussions with end-users, partners (including Accenture, PTC, Cisco and Microsoft), and Rockwell employees (including its director of software and control, and head of information solutions, in the EMEA region). “What’s clear when you listen to these market leaders, is how fast innovation is changing the face of manufacturing – and how successfully that’s delivering improved outcomes for everyone involved,”says Rockwell’s industry strategy and marketing director for EMEA, Greg de Clercq. https://drivesncontrols.news/oje52k Free guide helps motor users to cut costs White Paper helps SME manufacturers on path to net-zero The government-backed technology adoption programme Made Smarter has issued a White Paper to help SME manufacturers to accelerate their netzero plans. Called Decarbonisation through Digitalisation: manufacturing made smarter and greener with technology, the free document aims to simplify the topic by demystifying some of the terminology and analysing the latest research. It offers insights into how technologies are helping manufacturing and engineering businesses to make things smarter and greener, while driving growth and creating skilled jobs. The paper showcases several companies that have started decarbonisation journeys with help from Made Smarter. www.madesmarter.uk/resources/ decarbonisation-through-digitalisation Online service delivers custom moulded bearings in seven days Igus has introduced an online service called FastLine that allows injection-moulded, wearresistant plastics parts, such as plain bearings, flange bushes and pulleys, in special dimensions, to be configured and ordered in just four steps, and delivered within seven days. Conventionally, producing special bearing by injection moulding can take six weeks or more. With the new service, users can configure and order tribo-optimised components using the online iglidur Designer tool, specifying shapes, sizes and material characteristics. They are quoted a price and can download Step files and PDF drawings. The online tool creates 3D models and other design files. This data is used to program CNC machine tools semi-automatically. https://www.igus.co.uk/info/fastline-service New site makes it easier to specify standard parts WDS Components has launched a Web site that increases the speed and ease of selecting and ordering parts. A new search function, based on real-world language, supported by live chat, simplifies component selection. A countdown clock on each page shows the time left for same-day despatch. A quick order facility enables customers to enter part codes instead of searching for names or types. They can upload their own product references in bulk via a spreadsheet. New functions optimise the efficiency of account management. WDS manufactures around 50% of its stock in Leeds, ensuring good availability. www.wdscomponents.com Fluid and motion technologies picked on ‘self-serve’ basis Norgren has enhanced its Web site, offering improved functions, including the ability to select, order and track products on a“self-serve”basis. Automated prompts recommend additional components. Country sites have been combined in a single global channel, allowing customers to access up-to-date product, application and industry information, including datasheets, CAD files, configuration tools and installation guides. The site showcases various industry sectors. Product and technical information has been simplified. www.norgren.com/en
